The American Express® Gold Card has always been one of the most popular cards for people who spend a lot on dining, groceries, and travel. But with its latest 60th-anniversary update, the card is becoming even more well-rounded.
American Express introduced new and enhanced benefits for the Gold Card, including a stronger hotel earning rate, complimentary Hertz Five Star® Status, updated Dining Credit partners, limited-time anniversary offers, and a refreshed mobile app experience. The best part? These updates arrived with no change to the card’s $325 annual fee.
That does not automatically mean the card is perfect for everyone. The Amex Gold Card still works best for people who can actually use its benefits. But if you already spend on food, groceries, hotels, flights, Uber, dining apps, and travel, these changes can make the card more valuable.
Here are the 10 important Amex Gold Card changes and tips to take note of.
1. The Card Now Earns 5X Points on Prepaid Hotels Through Amex Travel
One of the biggest updates is the new 5X Membership Rewards® points on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App.
Previously, this category earned 2X points. So, moving from 2X to 5X is a major improvement for cardholders who book hotels through Amex Travel.
This makes the Amex Gold Card more useful as a travel card. Before this update, many people viewed the Gold Card mainly as a dining and grocery card. That is still its strongest identity, but the new hotel multiplier gives travelers another reason to use it.
For example, if you book a $1,000 prepaid hotel stay through Amex Travel, you can now earn 5,000 Membership Rewards points instead of only 2,000 points. That is an extra 3,000 points from one booking.
The tip here is simple: before booking a hotel, check Amex Travel and compare the price with the hotel’s direct website and other booking platforms. If the Amex Travel price is competitive and the booking terms make sense, using the Gold Card can be a smart way to earn more points.
Just remember that this 5X rate applies to prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App. If you book directly with the hotel, you generally will not earn this specific 5X prepaid hotel rate.
2. Complimentary Hertz Five Star® Status Is Now Included
Another new travel benefit is complimentary Hertz Five Star® Status for eligible Amex Gold Card Members.
This is a nice addition for people who rent cars from Hertz. According to American Express, Hertz Five Star Status can include benefits like skipping the counter at select locations, adding an additional driver at no additional cost, access to a wider selection of vehicles, and upgrades when available. Enrollment and Hertz Gold Plus Rewards® registration are required.
This does not suddenly make the Gold Card a full luxury travel card, but it does make the card more useful for road trips, airport rentals, and occasional car rentals.
The tip here is to enroll before you need the benefit. Do not wait until you are already at the rental counter. If you have the Amex Gold Card and you think you might rent from Hertz, activate the benefit and make sure your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards account is connected properly.
This is especially useful if you rent cars a few times a year. Even small perks like skipping the counter or getting an upgrade when available can make the rental experience smoother.
3. The $120 Dining Credit Has New Partners
The Amex Gold Card’s $120 Dining Credit has also been updated.
Gold Card Members can still earn up to $10 in statement credits each month when paying with the Gold Card at participating dining partners. Enrollment is required.
The updated partner list now includes Grubhub, including Seamless, Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wonder. American Express specifically announced Buffalo Wild Wings and Wonder as new partners in this update.
This matters because the value of the Dining Credit depends heavily on whether you actually use the eligible partners. Adding more recognizable or accessible dining options can make the credit easier for some cardholders to use.
The tip here is to treat the Dining Credit like a monthly habit. Since it is up to $10 per month, you do not get the full $120 all at once. If you skip a month, you may lose that month’s value.
A simple way to use it is to place one small Grubhub order each month, grab a meal at Five Guys, visit The Cheesecake Factory, or use it at another eligible partner. The goal is not to spend extra money just to use the credit. The goal is to apply the credit to food purchases you would already make.
4. There Is a Limited-Time Uber One Membership Credit
As part of the anniversary offers, American Express introduced a limited-time Uber One Membership Credit.
Gold Card Members can enroll and get a one-time statement credit of up to $96 when using the Gold Card to pay for an annual Uber One membership. This offer is available through October 30, 2026.
This can be useful for people who already use Uber or Uber Eats frequently. Uber One can offer savings and benefits on eligible rides and food delivery orders, so getting a statement credit toward an annual membership can add another layer of value.
The tip here is to check whether Uber One actually fits your lifestyle before enrolling. If you already order Uber Eats often or take Uber rides regularly, this offer may be easy to justify. But if you rarely use Uber, do not sign up just because there is a credit.
Also, remember that this is separate from the regular $120 Uber Cash benefit. The Gold Card already offers $10 in Uber Cash each month when you add the card to your Uber account and use an Amex Card for eligible Uber or Uber Eats transactions in the U.S.
5. There Is a Limited-Time 20% Hilton Honors Transfer Bonus
Another anniversary offer is a 20% bonus when transferring Membership Rewards points to a Hilton Honors account.
This offer is available through May 30, 2026.
At first glance, a transfer bonus can sound exciting. After all, getting more Hilton points from the same number of Amex points seems like a win. But you still need to compare the redemption value before transferring.
Membership Rewards points are flexible, and once you transfer them to a partner, you usually cannot transfer them back. That means you should avoid speculative transfers unless you already have a specific Hilton redemption in mind.
The tip here is to run the math first. Look at the hotel you want to book, check the cash price, check the Hilton points price, and then compare the value you are getting from the transfer.
A 20% transfer bonus can be useful, especially for a Hilton stay you already plan to book. But it is not automatically the best use of Membership Rewards points for every traveler.
6. The Hotel Collection Has Limited-Time Special Offers
American Express also introduced limited-time Amex Travel offers at select properties in The Hotel Collection.
Gold Card Members can access special offers from a curated selection of more than 250 Hotel Collection properties in over 40 countries. These offers may include a complimentary 3rd night, complimentary 4th night, 25% or more off select rooms, 30% or more off all suites, or a $150+ property credit toward eligible charges during the stay. These offers are available through July 15, 2026.
This adds more value to The Hotel Collection, which is already a useful Gold Card travel benefit. Normally, The Hotel Collection can offer a $100 credit toward eligible charges when booking eligible stays through Amex Travel, with a two-night minimum stay requirement.
The tip here is to use The Hotel Collection strategically. It can be valuable for special trips, but you should still compare the price against booking directly with the hotel or through other travel sites.
Also, pay attention to the details. A complimentary 3rd night or 4th night can be valuable, but only if the total price, cancellation terms, property fees, and travel dates make sense.
This is a good example of a benefit that can be excellent when used carefully but less valuable if you book without comparing.
7. There Are Additional 60th Anniversary Amex Offers
Gold Card Members may also see special 60th Anniversary Amex Offers across various merchants.
Amex Offers are personalized, which means not everyone will see the same offers. Enrollment may be limited and is required. Terms apply.
This is one of the easiest ways to get more value from an Amex card. Amex Offers can provide statement credits, extra points, or discounts at select restaurants, hotels, retailers, streaming services, travel companies, and other merchants.
The tip here is to check your Amex Offers regularly in the American Express App or online account. These offers change often, and some of the best ones may have limited enrollment.
It is also smart to add offers before making a purchase. If you forget to enroll first, you usually will not receive the offer benefit retroactively.
For people who want to maximize the Gold Card, Amex Offers can create extra value beyond the regular credits and points. Even saving $50 to $100 per year through offers can help offset the annual fee.

8. The Amex Mobile App Experience Has Been Updated
American Express also updated the mobile app experience for Gold Card Members.
The updated app experience is designed to make it easier to set up the account, enroll in benefits, track benefit usage, discover available perks, and see Resy restaurant recommendations.
This may sound like a small change, but it actually matters. One of the biggest challenges with the Amex Gold Card is that many benefits require enrollment or regular tracking.
For example, the Dining Credit, Resy Credit, Dunkin’ Credit, Hertz Five Star Status, Venue Collection offers, and some Amex Offers may require enrollment. The Uber Cash benefit also requires adding your Gold Card to your Uber account.
The tip here is to use the app as your benefits dashboard. Check which credits you have enrolled in, track which ones you have already used, and look for offers before spending.
A card like the Amex Gold becomes much easier to maximize when you stay organized. The app update appears designed to help with exactly that.
9. The Summer Seat by Amex Gold & Resy Is Coming
There is also an upcoming dining experience called The Summer Seat by Amex® Gold & Resy.
This will be an alfresco dining experience bringing together Resy chefs and artists to transform outdoor spaces at select Resy restaurants in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Gold Card Members will have onsite perks and early access to reserve tables.
This fits the overall identity of the Gold Card. Amex is clearly leaning into dining, lifestyle, and experiences, not just points and credits.
The tip here is to watch for booking details if you live in or plan to visit Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago. These types of experiences may have limited space, so early access could be useful if the event interests you.
For most cardholders, this may not be the biggest financial benefit. But for people who enjoy dining experiences, chef-driven meals, and special events, it adds a more premium lifestyle feel to the card.
10. The Annual Fee Stays at $325
One of the more positive parts of this update is that the annual fee is not changing.
The Amex Gold Card continues to have a $325 annual membership fee. American Express specifically framed these new and enhanced benefits as being added with no change to the annual fee.
That is important because credit card updates often come with fee increases. In this case, cardholders are getting additional benefits without an annual fee increase tied to this specific update.
The tip here is to recalculate the value of the card based on your actual usage.
The Amex Gold Card can offer up to $424 in potential annual dining-related credits through the $120 Dining Credit, $120 Uber Cash, $100 Resy Credit, and $84 Dunkin’ Credit. But those credits are only valuable if you use them naturally.
If you use the credits consistently, the $325 annual fee can be easier to justify. If you do not use Uber, Dunkin’, Resy restaurants, or the Dining Credit partners, the math becomes weaker.
So instead of asking, “Does the card have enough benefits?” ask, “Will I actually use these benefits?”
What These Changes Mean for the Amex Gold Card Overall
The Amex Gold Card is still mainly a dining and grocery card. That has not changed.
You still earn 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide, on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X. You also earn 4X points at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X.
Those two categories remain the foundation of the card.
But the update makes the Gold Card more travel-friendly. The jump from 2X to 5X on prepaid hotels through Amex Travel is meaningful. Hertz Five Star Status gives renters another reason to enroll and use the card. The Hotel Collection offers can add value for select trips. And the anniversary offers create more opportunities to save.
At the same time, the card still requires effort. You need to enroll in benefits, track monthly credits, compare travel prices, and redeem Membership Rewards points wisely.
That is why the Amex Gold Card is best for people who like optimizing.
Is the Updated Amex Gold Card Worth It?
The updated Amex Gold Card can be worth it if your lifestyle matches the benefits.
It is especially strong if you regularly spend on restaurants, groceries, flights, prepaid hotels, Uber, Uber Eats, Dunkin’, Resy restaurants, and eligible Dining Credit partners.
It may also be a better fit now for travelers who book hotels through Amex Travel, rent cars from Hertz, or want access to limited-time travel offers.
But it may not be worth it if you do not want to track credits or enroll in offers. The card has a lot of value, but much of that value depends on actually using the benefits.
The annual fee staying at $325 is good news, but it does not remove the need to do the math.
Final Thoughts
The Amex Gold Card update is a positive one overall.
The biggest changes are the new 5X points on prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, complimentary Hertz Five Star Status, and the updated $120 Dining Credit with new partners like Buffalo Wild Wings and Wonder. On top of that, cardholders can access limited-time anniversary offers such as the Uber One Membership Credit, Hilton Honors transfer bonus, special Hotel Collection offers, and curated Amex Offers.
The updated mobile app experience and upcoming Summer Seat by Amex Gold & Resy also show that American Express wants the Gold Card to feel more useful, more trackable, and more experience-driven.
The most important thing to remember is this: the Amex Gold Card gives you value when you actively use it.
Use the 4X dining and grocery categories. Compare Amex Travel when booking prepaid hotels. Enroll in Hertz Five Star Status. Use your monthly credits before they expire. Check Amex Offers regularly. And be smart about point transfers.
If you do all of that, the updated Amex Gold Card can be more than just a food card. It can become a strong everyday rewards card with meaningful travel and lifestyle benefits.
